One patient. Millions of data points. One complex clinical picture.
Throughout the perioperative pathway, a wide range of clinical information is generated – from comorbidities, laboratory values, and medication to monitoring data, physiological signals, and postoperative outcomes. Much of this information, however, remains fragmented across different systems and data sources.
Before surgery, individual risks are not always fully apparent. During surgery, large volumes of high-resolution data are generated continuously. After surgery, it becomes possible to assess which physiological changes, complications, and therapeutic decisions were clinically relevant.
AI²POC investigates how these multimodal data can be systematically integrated, scientifically analyzed, and combined with clinical expertise and artificial intelligence.

Translation into Clinical Care
Developing new approaches to personalized perioperative medicine
Our goal is to transform complex data into clinically relevant knowledge, improve the understanding of perioperative risk, and develop new approaches to personalized perioperative medicine.
Personalized perioperative medicine through data and research
We aim to help shape a future of perioperative medicine in which clinical expertise, high-quality data, and scientific evidence are systematically integrated.
Our research spans the entire perioperative pathway – from preoperative risk factors to high-resolution physiological signals and therapeutic decisions, through to postoperative outcomes and patient-reported measures.
Using data science and artificial intelligence, we seek to better understand complex relationships, identify relevant risk patterns, and develop new approaches toward increasingly personalized perioperative care.

Who works together at AI²POC?
Clinic, data science and engineering work on shared projects at AI²POC — not in parallel, but in a coordinated way.
Perspectives involved: Physicians · Nursing · Scientists · Data scientists & ML engineers · Bioinformaticians · Infrastructure & security · Process improvement
Physicians & nursing staff
They contribute clinical knowledge and operating-theatre practice. Without this perspective, research and models remain remote from care.
Data scientists & ML engineers
They translate clinical questions into data models and algorithms and test their robustness.
Bioinformaticians
They integrate heterogeneous data sources securely and create interoperable structures between systems.
Infrastructure & security
They ensure GDPR-compliant storage, encryption and access control.
Process improvement
They improve workflows and the integration of new methods into clinical routine.
From digital transformation to a research platform
AI²POC emerged from the stepwise digitalization of perioperative processes and the development of a dedicated research infrastructure. Since 2022, we have continuously expanded data integration, research projects, scientific collaborations, and human resources.
